Some of you might not know this,

but Terry Hays was the first artist that I interviewed, way back, before Art Skoop had a name. I ran into his work for the first time at The MAC during one of their collective shows. A few beers into our conversation, I found out that we both lived rather close to one another and we both shared a love of sweating in our garage/studios and gardening in Texas. Eventually we made plans for me to see his studio, and pick his brains on surviving as an artist, after college. During the interview, I learned that his wife, Kathy Robinson-Hays is also an artist. I found their home to be a wellspring of inspiration and beauty, even with the interrupting Grandfather Clock. I’ve stayed in touch over the years, thru all the shows, galas, and occasional run-ins. Lately these two have hit a great strides in their own artistic practice and I look forward to the amazing things these two talented artists create (and hopefully collaborate).

What is your Favorite Ice Cream?

KRH: Sometimes chocolate occasionally maple something or other, probably the Canadian influence sneaking in.

At what age did you accept your talent/craft?

KRH: Six...at six I was mimicking cut outs dolls to see if I could reproduce the images...the older neighborhood kids encouraged me. In middle school I was somehow inspired to draw orphan children often depicted on the back pages of commercial publications....

Did you go to school to learn this skill?

KRH: I had a certain amount of drawing skills from a young age and then yes went to various schools to learn more. As a teenager, I saved my portrait money and got accepted to the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada. I later graduated with my BFA HONS. from the University of Manitoba and my M.A. in studio arts from the Venice Program, N.Y.U. Study Abroad Program in Venice, Italy.

Do you have a studio (or similar) that you work out of?

KRH: My/our home studio...perfect for the middle of the night when all of a sudden you want to work.

Do you have a community of fellow weirdos that you look to for support?

KRH: I look to all the weirdos I have ever known and all the ones I have admired from afar but not known, for support and inspiration....

How do you support your creative pursuit financially?

KRH: I have been an Art Restoration / Conservator for the great majority of my artistic career. This has allowed, I believe, to be somewhat free and experimental in my artistic interests. Briefly, early on in my career in Canada, I was a scenic artist for the theater, specifically the Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Anything else of noteworthy qualities or facts worth mentioning?

KRH: Despite the fact that I constantly feel out of step with....whatever...I keep going...sometimes happily...other times....not so much. Recently I am obsessed with our spring/summer neighbors the Mississippi Kites. This is the third year, they have returned. I work on my novice photography skills as well as see them as new inspiration for my work. Whether it is two-dimensional or three-dimensional images, they inspire me by their presence in our yard.
